WLA’s Pro Bono Program: WLA often receives requests from individuals seeking free or reduced- fee legal services. To encourage attorneys and law firms to provide free or reduced-fee services to clients referred by WLA, WLA will discount membership fees by 50% for attorneys and law firms that participate in WLA’s Pro Bono Program.

Attorneys and law firms can participate in the program in two ways:

  1. 1. “Phone Clinic” – Attorneys or law firms must agree to offer a half-hour phone consultation to a client referred by WLA in exchange for a $20 suggested donation by the client to WLA and no other fee. Law firms must agree to provide two phone clinics per year per attorney, up to a maximum of fifty. For example, a solo practitioner must agree to provide two phone clinics per year. A law firm with eight attorneys must agree to provide eight phone clinics per year. A law firm with 25 attorneys and one with 100 attorneys both must agree to offer 50 clinics per year. It is only necessary that the law firm agree to provide the phone clinic. If the client does not contact the law firm, or if the firm is prevented from providing counsel due to a conflict, the firm may still receive credit for a phone clinic.

  2. 2. Pro Bono or Reduced Fee Services – Attorneys or law firms must agree to offer legal services to clients referred by WLA at a rate not to exceed 50% of the attorney’s or law firm’s standard fee for those services. Law firms with fewer than 25 attorneys must agree to accept a client referred to WLA for these reduced terms at least once a year. Law firms with more than 26 attorneys must agree to accept a client referred to WLA for these reduced terms at least twice a year.

To participate in the program, an attorney or law firm must indicate willingness to provide Phone Clinics, Pro Bono or Reduced Fee Services, or both. Acceptance into the program will be at the discretion of WLA’s Executive Director, who will monitor attorneys and law firms’ participation. If an attorney or a law firm is found to have refused to offer the appropriate number of Phone Clinics or Pro Bono or Reduced Fee Services when reasonably requested by WLA, WLA reserves the right to retroactively raise the membership fee to the standard rate and demand payment for the previous year.
